Founding Partner Kathy McCarthy was an 11-year veteran of the executive search consulting industry, having spent several years with a boutique retained firm in Chicago before co-founding McCarthy Bertschy & Associates in 2002.

Kathy grew up in the Chicago area, earning an undergraduate degree in Economics and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She began her career in the Management Associate development program of LaSalle National Bank in Chicago, where she served in several Operations and Commercial Lending assignments. When an opportunity arose to join W.W. Grainger, Inc., a Fortune 500 industrial distribution company, Kathy transitioned to Corporate Treasury, with responsibility for cash management, bank relations, industrial revenue bond financings, retirement fund asset administration and competitive benchmarking. After taking time out to care for her children, Kathy joined a boutique retained search firm in Chicago and progressed to Partner before launching McCarthy Bertschy & Associates.

Reflecting the generalist nature of her executive search experience, Kathy led the successful completion of assignments for officer level executives across a broad array of industries including medical device, capital equipment, financial services, hardware and home improvement distribution, professional services, publishing, automotive component manufacturing and distribution, consumer products and health care. In recent years, her work focused on leadership roles in finance and professional services, although she always enjoyed the diversity of “first ever” kinds of assignments.

Kathy was a Past President of the Chicago Finance Exchange, a 25-year old professional association with a membership encompassing 200 of the most senior women financial executives in the Chicago area. She was an active Board Member with a particular interest in the Membership and Program committees. Kathy had considerable experience in public speaking engagements for a range of organizations including The Conference Board, Schiff Hardin & Waite, the Financial Women’s Association of Chicago, Princeton University Alumni Organization and Drake, Beam & Morin.

Kathy was a terrific colleague and friend who was loved and respected by all who knew her professionally and personally.
